  • Shattered Spalding basketball backboard in packaging

Spalding backboards are made of tempered glass and meant to stay flat.

  • Spalding backboard curved into a half-circle

After multiple tests, Scott and Rich figured out how to bend the shattered glass while keeping it together, as well as maintaining all of the critical dimensions.

The completed bent glass panels were then transported to Walla Walla Foundry, where Scott and Rich worked closely with the foundry crew to install the glass into the impeccably fabricated aluminum frame works.

A Bent Reality

Artist: Dan Colen
Metal production: Walla Walla Foundry
Glass production: Scott Schroeder and Rich Lamothe of Glass Strategies

Capturing Artist Dan Colen’s vision using shattered and bent Spalding glass backboards posed several challenges. After experiencing some complications on the first piece, the artist contacted Walla Walla Foundry, who soon brought in Scott to help. Once Scott devised a solution and helped successfully produce the first piece, Walla Walla Foundry and Cube6 pushed the techniques to the edge to make an 8-foot diameter sculpture, which was shipped across the country for 2013 Frieze New York.
